Walk into any jewellery chain and you will find beautiful pieces. But none of them were made for you. None of them carry your story, reflect your taste exactly, or were shaped around the specific stone your grandmother left you.
This is what custom made jewellery offers — and it is at the heart of everything Panos Melekkis does in Limassol. For over four decades, the Melekkis family has been crafting pieces that belong to one person and one person alone. In this guide, we explain how the process works, what you can create, and why now is a particularly interesting time to invest in fine gold jewellery.
What Does Custom Made Jewellery Actually Mean?
Custom made jewellery — also called bespoke jewellery — is a piece designed and crafted specifically for you, from scratch. There is no template, no standard size, no compromise between what you want and what happens to be in stock.
It is different from personalised jewellery (which typically means adding an engraving or choosing a birthstone on an existing design). With truly bespoke jewellery, the design itself is yours. You decide the form, the metal, the stones, the proportions — and a skilled jeweller brings that vision to life.
At Panos Melekkis, bespoke is not a premium tier — it is the only way we work.
What Can You Create at Panos Melekkis?
Almost any piece of fine jewellery can be made to order. The most common commissions we receive in our Limassol studio include:
- Engagement rings — solitaires, halo settings, three-stone designs, or something entirely original
- Wedding bands — for both partners, in yellow, white or rose gold, with or without stones
- Necklaces and pendants — from delicate everyday pieces to statement fine jewellery
- Earrings — studs, drops, hoops — designed to complement an existing collection or stand alone
- Bracelets and bangles — including tennis bracelets with natural or lab-grown diamonds
- Men’s jewellery — rings, chains, bracelets — refined and understated or bold and architectural
- Jewellery recreation — transforming inherited or sentimental pieces into something new
If you can describe it — or even just describe the feeling you want when you wear it — we can design it.
The Materials We Work With
Every custom piece at Panos Melekkis is crafted in 18k gold — yellow, white or rose — chosen for its combination of purity, durability and depth of colour. We also work in 14k and 9k gold depending on the brief.
For stones, we work with both natural and lab-grown diamonds, as well as a wide range of precious and semi-precious gemstones. Panos studied gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Florence, which means every stone is assessed and selected with genuine expertise — not simply sourced from a catalogue.
What gets requested varies by location. In Limassol, clients frequently ask for sapphires, rubies and emeralds. In our Dubai studio, we see more demand for opal, alexandrite and London Blue Topaz. If you have a stone in mind — or a stone you already own — we start from there.
Is Now a Good Time to Invest in Custom Gold Jewellery?
Gold has had a remarkable two years. At the time of writing, the price has risen by over 44% year-on-year, setting 53 new all-time highs and surpassing $4,000 per ounce for the first time in history — with an intraday peak of over $5,500 recorded in early 2026.
For anyone considering a significant piece of fine jewellery, this context matters — but perhaps not in the way you might expect.
Fine gold jewellery is not a financial instrument. But it is an asset with inherent material value that moves with the price of the metal it contains. A custom ring crafted today in 18k gold holds that value within it. Unlike mass-produced pieces where the retail markup is disconnected from the material, bespoke jewellery from an independent maker is priced honestly against what it contains and what it takes to create it.
There is also a simpler argument: a piece you wear every day, that was made for you alone, that carries real gold and real stones — that is not the same as buying a commodity. It appreciates in ways that no chart can measure.
Whether gold prices continue to rise or correct, the value of something made beautifully and worn with meaning does not fluctuate with the market.
The Custom Design Process — Step by Step
The process is more straightforward than most people expect. Here is how it works at our Limassol studio:
Step 1: Consultation
Every commission begins with a conversation — in person at our showroom, or remotely if you are ordering from outside Cyprus. Panos meets with you personally. He listens to what you have in mind, looks at any references you bring, and asks the questions that help him understand not just the design but what this piece means to you.
Step 2: Design and Approval
Based on your brief, Panos develops a design proposal. For most commissions, this includes a hand-drawn sketch followed by a 3D rendering so you can see exactly how the finished piece will look before any metal is touched. You review, request changes, and approve. Nothing proceeds without your confirmation. This is your piece — every decision is yours to make.
Step 3: Crafting
Once the design is approved, the piece is made by hand in our workshop. The metal is worked, stones are selected and set, and the finishing is done to the same standard as any piece in the Panos Melekkis collection. Craftsmanship is not a promise here — it is the only way we know how to work.
Step 4: Delivery
Most custom commissions are completed within three to six weeks. More complex pieces — or those involving multiple stones or intricate handwork — may take a little longer. You receive the finished piece with full documentation of the materials, including any gemstone certificates.
How Much Does Custom Made Jewellery Cost in Cyprus?
The honest answer is: it depends. The cost of a bespoke piece is determined by three things — the metal (how much gold and at what karat), the stones (natural vs lab-grown, size, quality), and the complexity of the design (how much hand labour is involved).
A simple custom band in 18k gold starts from a few hundred euros. A bespoke engagement ring with a natural diamond is a different conversation — one that deserves the time to get right. We provide a full, transparent quote before any work begins. There are no surprises, and there is no pressure.
What we can say is that for a comparable level of craftsmanship, material quality and personalisation, a custom piece from an independent jeweller in Cyprus will almost always offer better value than an equivalent piece from a luxury brand — because you are paying for the work and the materials, not the name on the box.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most pieces are ready within three to six weeks from the approved design. We give you a specific timeline at the consultation stage based on the complexity of your commission.
Yes — and we encourage it. If you have inherited gold, a loose stone, or a piece you would like to repurpose, we are very happy to work with your existing materials. This is also a meaningful way to carry something of sentimental value forward into a new form.
Absolutely. Men’s custom jewellery is a growing part of what we do — rings, chains, bracelets and cufflinks, designed with the same attention to detail as any other commission.
Yes. We work with clients from across Cyprus, the UAE, and internationally. The consultation can begin remotely via photographs and video call, and we ship securely to most destinations. Many clients visiting Cyprus also use the opportunity to start or collect a commission in person.
In practice, the terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to jewellery designed and made specifically for one client. ‘Bespoke’ has its roots in the tailoring tradition — a piece that has been ‘spoken for’ before it exists. We use both terms to mean the same thing: made for you, and no one else.
Ready to start? Visit our Limassol showroom for a personal consultation with Panos, or get in touch to begin the conversation remotely. Bring an idea, a reference, or simply a sense of what you are looking for — we will take it from there.
