Somewhere in your home, there is probably a piece of jewellery you never wear. Maybe it belonged to your grandmother. Maybe it was a gift from someone who is no longer here. The design feels dated, but the idea of letting it go is simply not an option.
This is one of the most personal conversations we have at Panos Melekkis Jewellery in Limassol. Panos sits with every client himself — listens to the story behind the piece before he ever thinks about what it might become. And the answer is almost always the same: you do not have to choose between keeping the memory and wearing something beautiful. Jewellery redesign lets you do both.
In this guide, we explain what jewellery redesign involves, when it makes sense, how the process works, and what kinds of pieces can be transformed.
What Does Jewellery Redesign Actually Mean?
Jewellery redesign — sometimes called jewellery recreation or repurposing — is the process of taking an existing piece and transforming it into something new. The original gold, gemstones or diamonds are preserved and reused. Only the form changes.
This is different from jewellery repair, which restores a broken piece to its original condition. Redesign goes further: a ring becomes a pendant, a brooch becomes a pair of earrings, or several separate pieces are melted down and reborn as a single statement ring.
The sentimental value stays intact. The craftsmanship becomes entirely new.
When Should You Consider Redesigning Your Jewellery?
There is no single right reason to bring a piece in for redesign. These are the situations we see most often:
- Inherited jewellery you love but would never wear in its current form
- An outdated style that no longer reflects who you are
- A damaged piece where restoration alone does not feel worthwhile
- Multiple small pieces you would like to combine into one meaningful item
- Stones without a setting — loose diamonds or gemstones from a broken piece
- A ring that no longer fits and cannot be resized in its current design
If any of these sound familiar, jewellery redesign in Cyprus is almost certainly an option worth exploring.
The Redesign Process at Panos Melekkis
Every redesign at our Limassol studio begins with a conversation. There is no obligation and no pressure — just an honest discussion about what you have, what you would like, and what is possible.
Step 1: Consultation
You bring the piece in — or send photographs to start the conversation. Panos meets with you personally. He holds the piece, looks at the craftsmanship, asks about where it came from. Before any design conversation begins, he wants to understand what this jewellery means to you. That context shapes everything that follows.
Step 2: Design Proposal
Based on your brief, Panos creates a design proposal — drawn by hand first, then refined. For more complex pieces, this includes a 3D rendering so you can visualise the result before any work begins. You are involved at every decision point. This is your piece, not ours — and it should feel that way throughout.
Step 3: Crafting
Once the design is approved, the work begins in our workshop. The original metal is refined and reworked. Stones are carefully removed, assessed and re-set. The new piece is crafted by hand to the same standard as any original Panos Melekkis creation.
Step 4: Delivery
The finished piece is presented to you with full documentation of the materials used, including any gemstone certificates. Most redesign projects are completed within three to six weeks depending on complexity.
What Kinds of Jewellery Can Be Redesigned?
- Rings transformed into pendants or earrings
- Brooches and pins converted into modern necklace pendants
- Gold chains and bangles melted down and recast into new forms
- Coins or medals set into rings, pendants or bracelets
- Several small pieces combined into one larger, cohesive design
- Engagement rings updated with new settings or additional stones
If the piece contains 9k, 14k or 18k gold, it can almost certainly be repurposed. Gemstones — diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds — are evaluated individually. Most stones in good condition can be re-set without any loss.
Frequently Asked Questions About Jewellery Redesign in Cyprus
Yes. Inherited or heirloom jewellery is one of the most common requests we receive. The process is exactly the same as any other redesign — we assess the piece, discuss options, and create something new that honours the original.
Most projects take between three and six weeks from the approved design to the finished piece. More complex commissions — for example, combining multiple items or incorporating detailed hand engraving — may take a little longer. We give you a timeline at the consultation stage.
This is the question we are asked most often, and the answer is no. The material itself — the gold your grandmother wore, the diamond from your mother’s ring — remains in the new piece. What changes is only the form. Many clients tell us the redesigned piece feels even more meaningful than the original, because it is now something they reach for every day. It carries the history forward rather than locking it away in a drawer.
Yes. We strongly prefer to work with your original materials wherever possible. If the gold needs to be supplemented (for example, if the design requires more material than the original piece contains), we will discuss this with you in advance and provide transparent pricing.
Cost depends on the complexity of the design, the amount of work involved, and whether additional materials are needed. A simple re-setting of a stone into a new mount starts from a few hundred euros. More complex redesigns involving multiple pieces or custom hand-crafting are quoted individually. We always provide a full quote before any work begins — there are no surprises.
Ready to give your jewellery a new life? Bring your piece to our Limassol studio and sit with Panos for a personal consultation. He will assess it honestly, share what is possible, and let you decide — with no obligation and no rush.
